Research Opportunities

The Microbiology and Cell Science Department has received a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Talent Expansion Program grant from the National Science Foundation that provides funding for undergraduate research positions. Selected students will have the opportunity to conduct a 10-week independent research project under the supervision of UF faculty. Undergraduate research is a transformative experience for many individuals: it generates and sustains enthusiasm for science as well as building confidence in research skills and knowledge. Often, research experiences as an undergraduate are cited as pivotal factors in budding STEM careers. Research experiences can lead to student-authored publications and presentations.

The Microbiology & Cell Science Department is part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS) at UF. IFAS has an extensive network of Research and Education Centers that are located throughout the state of Florida. UF faculty researchers at these IFAS Centers conducts a wide-array of competitive and leading research. Students will have access to research experiences at one of several different UF laboratories including main campus of UF in Gainesville, Ft. Lauderdale, Homestead, Indian River, Vero Beach, Kennedy Space Center and other statewide locations.

Students can participate in undergraduate research in microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry, plant science, entomology and many other biological sciences. Students will conduct an independent research project under the direction of a faculty mentor for 10 weeks during the summer (approximately 40 hours per week). Students will receive a stipend of $4500.00 for the summer and will be responsible for their own living expenses. Preference is given to the Miami Dade College Students enrolled in the UF MCS Distance Education Program. If selected, students are expected to present their research project during a poster session in the late summer/early fall, complete program evaluations, and participate in any laboratory meetings, journal clubs, safety training or other academic activities as specified by their faculty mentor.
