    • Description of Research

General area: The Maupin-Furlow lab is investigating extremophiles of the domain Archaea. Our overall goals are to advance understanding of systems important to archaeal cell function and to develop useful tools for biotechnology.

Our main-focus is on the ubiquitin-like system in Archaea and its function in targeting proteins for proteasome-mediated degradation and in regulating enzyme activity through non-proteolytic mechanisms. Other systems under investigation include sulfur mobilization, oxidative stress response, and secondary metabolism with emphasis on archaeal systems that are fundamentally conserved in eukaryotes. We are also advancing the use of extremophiles and their enzymes to optimize the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. To achieve these goals, we use cutting-edge techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics, genetics, systems biology, and structural biology.
