    • Description of Research
      The non-coding functions performed by nucleic acids depend on exquisite secondary and tertiary structures. Despite the critical role of these structures in controlling biological events, our mechanistic and molecular understanding of nucleic acids' non-coding functions is still lagging.

      From this perspective, the Passalacqua lab (a.k.a. the Laboratory of Nucleic Acids) is focused on the discovery and structural characterization of functional nucleic acids (RNA, DNA and modified nucleic acids) using a combination of bioinformatic, biochemical, biophysical, molecular biology and structural biology approaches. We are particularly interested in determining structure-function relationships of RNAs and DNAs in biology.

      Current topics of research include:

      • Discovery and characterization of structured non-coding RNAs involved in gene regulation and host-pathogen/microbe interactions, such as ribozymes, riboswitches, RNA Thermometers and other non-coding RNAs
      • Deciphering how complex DNA structures in R-loops impact genome stability - DNA and RNA aptamer development and characterization
      • Astrobiology - nucleic acids in origins and evolution of life in the universe.
