Shape the future of discovery with a Ph.D. in microbiology designed for scientific leadership, advanced research and high-impact careers.
Two learning formats structured to accommodate students at every stage in their lives. Choose from our full-time on-campus format or the fully online distance option built for working professionals eager to level-up their careers.
The Ph.D. program in Microbiology and Cell Science prepares scientists to lead research that answers complex biological questions and drives discovery across medicine, biotechnology and environmental science.
Microbiology drives innovation across industries that shape global health, environmental systems and emerging technologies. As demand grows for scientists who can generate and apply new knowledge, doctoral training becomes a key differentiator in the workforce.
A Ph.D. is not simply an additional credential. It is a requirement for roles that define research direction, including principal investigator positions, advanced research leadership in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development and faculty careers in academia.
Graduates with doctoral training also see expanded long-term career potential. While early career paths vary, research shows advanced degree holders access higher-value roles and increased earning potential over time, particularly in science-driven industries.
Advances in artificial intelligence are accelerating the pace and scale of biological research. As data generation increases, so does the need for scientists who can design studies, ask the right questions and interpret results with scientific and clinical context. AI extends the reach of research, but it increases demand for researchers with the training to guide it.
Ph.D. graduates lead this work. They direct research programs, publish findings and move into roles across biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical development, federal research agencies and academic institutions.
At the University of Florida, doctoral training is supported by a high-impact research environment, experienced faculty and access to active areas of study across microbiology and cell science. Whether in a full-time or professional format, students build the expertise required to contribute to research at an advanced level.

RESOURCES & SUPPORT
Connect directly with an MCS program advisor to discuss our on-campus and Distance Ph.D. options. Exploring your path to doctoral study? We can also help you understand how our M.S. and graduate certificates may fit into your academic and career goals.
The University of Florida's Department of Microbiology and Cell Science offers two Ph.D. pathways: an on-campus Ph.D. in Microbiology and Cell Science and a fully online distance Ph.D. in Microbial and Cellular Data Science. Both are doctoral research programs designed to prepare students for advanced careers in research, academia, biotechnology, government and other science-driven fields.
The primary difference is how and where students complete their doctoral training. The on-campus Ph.D. is based in Gainesville and provides students with access to UF research laboratories, campus resources and departmental assistantship support, including a stipend and tuition waiver. The Distance Ph.D. is designed for students who cannot relocate to Gainesville and allows students to complete the program fully online while conducting research in collaboration with their major professor and research committee.
Yes. The Ph.D. is a research-focused doctoral degree centered on original scientific investigation. Students work with a major professor and graduate committee, complete advanced coursework and research, pass the qualifying examination and develop and defend a dissertation based on original research.
The department's research spans areas including microbial biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, virology, host-pathogen interactions, environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, genomics, astrobiology, parasitology and microbial communities.
Completion time varies depending on a student's academic background, research project and progress toward degree requirements. Students entering with a bachelor's degree typically complete the Ph.D. in approximately four to five years, although individual timelines vary.
This depends on which Ph.D. pathway you choose.
Students may enter the campus Ph.D. program with a bachelor's degree. A master's degree is not required for admission.
For the distance Ph.D., a master's degree is required. The purpose of this requirement is to reduce the coursework required for the distance Ph.D., so that the majority of student time can be spent on research. This is important for our distance Ph.D. students, who are primarily completing the program on a part-time basis.
Students who already hold an eligible master's degree may be able to apply 30 master's credits toward the 90-credit Ph.D., subject to the department's requirements and approval.
Funding differs between the two Ph.D. pathways.
On-campus Ph.D. students receive a stipend and tuition waiver as part of the department's doctoral support. Distance Ph.D. students do not receive a department-funded stipend or tuition waiver.
Students in either pathway are welcome to apply for scholarships and other financial assistance available through the University of Florida. The Department of Microbiology and Cell Science does not offer departmental scholarships.
