Study America expands how graduate students experience microbiology and the life sciences through immersive learning opportunities connected to real-world scientific environments. It's science, in the field.
Participation in Study America is optional and earns credit hours toward graduate degree programs and includes a required reflective assignment designed to connect each experience back to academic and professional development.
The program creates meaningful opportunities for in-person engagement with faculty, peers and the broader UF community, particularly for students completing coursework online or asynchronously. It also expands exposure to scientific careers, industries and environments beyond traditional academic settings for all participating graduate students.
Instead of remaining limited to classroom or laboratory settings, students engage directly with the systems, organizations and environments that shape scientific discovery. These experiences may include public health agencies, biotechnology companies, research institutions, environmental field sites, government organizations and science policy spaces across the country.
The initiative introduces students to the broad range of pathways connected to microbiology including biotechnology, healthcare, environmental science, agriculture, public health, science policy, research administration and scientific communication.
This approach allows students to see microbiology in action across scientific, governmental and industry settings where decisions are made, research is supported and discoveries move beyond the lab.
