- Credits: 3
- Prerequisites: molecular biology or biochemistry
- When Offered: Fall
- Syllabus - BSC 6459 Fundamentals in Bioinformatics
Description
Introduction to the basic bioinformatic tools used in computational biology for life science research. The course will use web-based resources that analyze gene and protein sequences as pertinent data examples.
Course Goals
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Retrieve information on genes and proteins from biological and genomic databases
- Predict genes from DNA sequences
- Identify promoters and regulatory elements in DNA sequences
- Analyze protein sequences
- Compare protein and DNA sequences
- Visualize and analyze protein structures
- Construct and interpret simple phylogenies
