    Description

    This course examines the structure, nutrition, and growth of microorganisms; the characterization of representative microorganisms and viruses; and metabolic properties, and provides an introduction to microbial genetics, immunology, and the pathogenesis of microorganisms. Note that this course is intended only for students who did not complete an upper-division microbiology course as an undergraduate student

    Course Objectives

    By the end of the course, students will be able to:


    1. Identify the key differences and similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures.
    2. Explain the principles of physiology, metabolism, and microbial growth.
    3. Analyze the genetic makeup of microorganisms and the principles of genetic engineering.
    4. Evaluate the dynamics of host-parasite interactions.
    5. Describe the mechanisms of pathogenesis and the role of virulence factors.
    6. Classify selected infectious diseases based on their causes and symptoms.
    7. Interpret the workings of the immune system, host defense mechanisms, and the role of vaccines.
    8. Assess the effectiveness of various antimicrobial agents and chemotherapeutics.
    9. Examine the principles of microbial ecology and symbiosis.
    10. Apply the principles of microbiology to environmental contexts.
    11. Investigate the role of microbiology in food, water, soil, and industrial applications.
