To enable closed-loop biomanufacturing in Space and on Earth, the Averesch-lab explores the limits of microbial metabolism with Synthetic Biology. By developing new-to-nature biochemical functions and pathways, we create microbial platforms that excel at the utilization of single-carbon compounds and convert these into useful chemicals, such as advanced bioplastics. We also aim to understand the limitations for life off-Earth by charting the bounds of microbial carbon- and energy-metabolism. Pushing these boundaries, we aim to create advanced microbial cell factories that assimilate substrates most efficiently.
- Modulating the Biosynthesis of Polyesters for In Situ Manufacturing
Engineering the biochemical mechanism of natural polyester synthesis in microbes unlocks a wide range of thermoplastic materials. By tuning the molecular composition of these polymers, the Averesch-lab discovers advanced biological polyesters that meet or exceed the performance specifications of synthetic plastics. Generating these materials from waste-derived feedstocks enables the recycling of resources for a circular manufacturing economy.
- Enhancing the Efficiency of Carbon Assimilation
Designing novel pathways for utilization of single-carbon compounds can improve the efficiency of cellular metabolism. By combining genetic engineering with adaptive laboratory evolution, the Averesch-lab is constructing new microbial cell factories as platforms for industrial biotechnology.
- Elucidating the Limitations of Life Microbial Carbon- and Energy Metabolism
Interrogating metabolism through Systems and Synthetic Biology allows asking the question of what life may look like in ecological niches that do not exist on Earth. More specifically, the Averesch-lab is interested in alternative routes of carbon-assimilation and -cycling, given the constraints of extraterrestrial environments.

Fulfillment of the minimum requirement does not guarantee an applicant’s acceptance into the program.
